I wrote some lyrics this morning which I’ve tentatively titled “If You Let Me.”
I read “No Booker, No Bouncer, No Bartender” by Shannon Curtis a couple of months ago and thought it was a great book for Indie musicians. This week I finally received Amanda Palmer‘s “The Art of Asking,” am about half-way through it, and, likewise, I think Ms. Palmer’s book is a great read for an Indie musician.
I’m not writing a review, but I will say that both books present a view of the music business from “outside the box,” proving that there are other (and sometimes kinder and gentler) ways to skin a cat – successfully.
Anyway, the lyrics came to me, inspired in part, I think, by both ladies.
If You Let Me
If I trust you will you take me in and listen to me sing?
I promise not to stay too long and I won’t take a thing
That you don’t give me.
And if you let me…
I will sing you all my songs, if you will let me;
I’ll sing all my rights and wrongs, if you will let me.
I’ll shine for you and show you where I have rusted through,
And sing that I have loved and trusted you.
If I sing for you will you stay and listen with a smile?
And then sing me all the truths you learned when you were just a child –
Sing what you’ve lived through?
I will let you…
Sing me all the songs I need to hear to get you.
And then I will sing your songs and not forget you;
I’ll sing all your rights and wrongs and never forget you.
I’ll shine for you and show you where I have rusted through,
And sing that you have loved and trusted, too.
If I trust you and we sing our songs – burn them in our hearts –
Will you sing mine like I sing yours when we are far apart?
This I will give you,
If you will let me…
I will always sing our songs, if you will let me;
I’ll sing all our rights and wrongs, if you will let me.
And our songs will shine forever, never rusted through,
Songs that sing what love and trust can do.
